TOO HOT TOO COLD JUST RIGHT, Burning Attic Theatre Collective
The lights dim to pink and the world goes all slow-motion. She leaned in for a kiss and...is that it? Wasn’t it meant to feel like fireworks?
Is there something missing? How do you explain a lack of something? How do we do representation right?
Jade cannot shake the voice in her head and it’s getting louder…
TOO HOT TOO COLD JUST RIGHT is a play exploring the spectrum of asexual and aromantic identities, challenging the societal scripts and representations of our romantic and sexual connections.
The National LGBT Survey 2018 found that the trans and ace communities are the two most vulnerable groups to being pathologized by medical professionals and others. Asexual people are 10% more likely to be offered “conversion” therapy than any other group. The A in LGBTQIA+ stands for asexuality, but it is not often visible in queer communities and rarely at the forefront of public awareness.
We have a problem, and it starts with representation.
I've been providing dramaturgical support to Burning Attic Theatre Collective throughout the research and development process of their groundbreaking work TOO HOT TOO COLD JUST RIGHT, helping develop an interview guide, recruit narrators, conduct oral histories, and analyze and distill the results. I've also provided my academic expertise in creative workshops.
The work-in-progress play had its first script-in-hand development performance at Camden People's Theatre in November 2024.
